2014: 10, 100, 200

2014…! Taí um ano que tinha tudo para ser bem esquecível (e não, a Copa do Mundo e as Eleições não contam… Ambos eventos estavam condenados a serem um completo constrangimento...) e eis que se torna um período de 12 meses bastante intenso e interessante… Então, como todos os anos, esse é um post... um resumo... uma reflexão... sobre algumas das coisas marcantes que aconteceram durante o ano. Vamos nessa!

2014…! From the very beginning all signs led me - and a lot of friends - to believe that this year were going to be quite uneventful (and the Brazil World Cup and Elections did not help to make things better… Both were doomed to be major embarrassments). But, I’m very happy to realize that I - and a lot of friends - were wrong! Those last 12 months were intense and interesting and now it’s time to remember some of the stuff that made 2014 a very special year. Let's Go!





Bom... Definitivamente o ano de 2014 foi o ano do novo Luerzer’s Archive 200 Best Illustrators Worldwide. Fiquei imensamente feliz quando recebi a notícia de que estava mais uma vez incluído nessa lista tão especial. É minha terceira vez como um dos 200 Melhores Ilustradores, mas a alegria é a mesma de cinco anos atrás...  Mas, de fato, devo dizer que dessa vez foi ainda melhor: Foram sete ilustrações selecionadas, das quais cinco foram incluídas no livro!

Well, definitely 2014 was the year of the newest edition of Luerzer’s Archive 200 Best Illustrators Worldwide. I am one of the illustrators included in this very special list and I’m very happy about it. This is the third time for me but it feels as great as it was five years ago … But, I must say that this time was even better: No less than seven of my illustrations were selected and five included in the book!



As ilustrações selecionadas para o 200 Best Illustrators Worldwide 2014 / 2015 foram: A arte para a capa para o livro "Procura-se um Amor" da Editora Salamandra (e que você pode ver no começo desse post). "People Movers", capa para um dos sketchbooks produzidos pela Schizzibooks (e parte da minha série "Urban Walkers"). "A Evolução do Trabalho", uma ilustração página dupla criada para um dos livros didáticos da Editora Ática. O pin up em 3D feito para a revista Strange Kids Anthology. E "A Casa de Mozart em Viena", ilustração para texto de mesmo nome publicado no Almanaque Ática-Recreio.

The illustrations included in the 200 Best Illustrators Worldwide 2014 / 2015 book were: The cover illustration of the "Procura-se um Amor" book (Published by Salamandra in 2013). "People Movers", cover of one of the sketchbooks produced by Schizzibooks and part of my Urban Walkers series. "Job Evolution" a double-page illustration extravaganza made for a educational book published by Ática Publishing House. The 3D pin up made for the Strange Kids Anthology. And the "Mozart's House in Vienna", illustration made for the Brazilian Ática-Recreio Almanac.







Além dessas, duas outras ilustrações foram também selecionadas (mas ficaram fora do livro): "Big", outra capa para a Schizzibooks (e também parte da série "Urban Walkers") e "Sweet Memories", ilustração editorial para a Revista Sorria (Editora MOL).

And two more illustrations (but not included in the book): "Big", a Urban Walker and also another cover for Schizzibooks sketchbooks  and "Sweet Memories", created for Sorria, a Brazilian magazine published by the good folks at MOL.





Ser escolhido pela terceira vez consecutiva para o Luerzer's Archive 200 Best Illustrators Worldwide foi realmente uma surpresa maravilhosa...! Especialmente levando em consideração que dos 200 artistas selecionados, apenas 70 já tinham sido escolhidos anteriormente. Parece ser aquele caso onde é difícil entrar e mais difícil ainda continuar dentro...! Mas a gente sempre pode tentar, certo? ;0)

To be included for the third time in a row in the Luerzer's Archive 200 Best Illustrators Worldwide was really a blast…! Specially when considering that a total of 130 artists showcased in this volume have appeared in none of the previous editions. This seems to be the case of being hard to get inside and even harder to stay inside...! But one can always try, I guess ;0)







Em 2014 eu também fui incluído no 3x3 Illustration Directory, um livro incrível que todos os anos reúne alguns dos melhores ilustradores contemporâneos em atividade. O meu trabalho incluído nessa edição foi a arte que criei para o livro e exposição "Bikefriendly Imagination" (Göoo Ediciones, Argentina).

And this year I was also included in the very special edition of the 3x3 Illustration Directory , a book that showcases some of the best contemporary illustrators from all corners of the world. The artwork selected for the  Directory is the one I created for the art show and book "Bikefriendly Imagination" (Göoo Ediciones, Argentina).





"Bikefriendly Imagination" também foi incluído na coleção American Illustration 33, junto com a arte para a capa do livro "Procura-se um Amor", que já tinha sido selecionada para o 200 Best Illustrators.

"Bikefriendly Imagination" é um livro + exposição produzidos pela Göoo Ediciones na Argentina. O lançamento de ambos aconteceu nesse ano na Argentina e na Colombia. É um belíssimo livro, todo sobre bicicletas. E em 2015 as se preparam para vir ao Brasil! Espero ter novidades sobre isso em breve...!

"Bikefriendly Imagination" is a book + art show production by Göoo Ediciones and released this year in Argentina and Colombia. The book is all about bikes and it looks gorgeous. In 2015 the bikes are coming to Brazil…! I hope to be able to share more info about it soon.





E meus sortudos amigos Colombianos também receberam a exposição Los Diez 2...! Essa exposição selecionou apenas 10 ilustradores entre os vencedores do Latin American Fotografía and Ilustración Dos para uma exposição itinerante - apropriadamente batizada de Los Diez (Os Dez) -  que começou nos Estados Unidos e veio até a America Latina. A minha arte que participou dessa festa toda foi a ilustração que criei para a capa do álbum da banda Hotelo.

My lucky Colombian friends also received the Los Diez 2 exhibition! I was thrilled to be one of the winners of the Latin American Fotografía and Ilustración Dos competition and to be included in the Los Diez: A special, traveling exhibit produced by Epson. My cover for the Brazilian rock band Hotelo was selected and after being exhibited in New York it was shown in Colombia.





E mesmo estando mais do que feliz e grato sendo parte dos 200 e dos 10... Ainda tive a incrível oportunidade de ser um dos 100 ilustradores selecionados - entre mais de 1400 inscritos - para a exposição (e livro) Showcase 100, que irá acontecer em 2015, no mês de Abril, em Londres! O meu trabalho selecionado foi um dos músicos da minha série de ilustrações "Fantasy Waltz".

If I wasn’t grateful enough to be one of the 200 and one of the Los Diez... I’m also one of the 100 illustrators selected (from over 1400 entries) to be part of the upcoming Showcase 100 exhibition (and book) that will take place on April 2015 in London, UK!  It will be awesome…! My contribution for the Showcase 100 was one of the musicians from my Fantasy Waltz series.





A coleção "Fantasy Waltz" foi lançada em Dezembro e está disponível na minha página no site Colab55. Lá você encontrará posters, canecas, camisetas, cases para celular... Tudo ilustrado com música mágica...! E o pessoal da Colab55 ainda fizeram uma entrevista comigo que você pde conferir na página deles. Foi uma grande oportunidade de citar J. R. R. Tolkien e falar um pouquinho sobre meu trabalho e de algumas das coisas que me inspiram.

The Fantasy Waltz collection was launched on December and is available at Colab55. You will find posters, mugs, t-shirts, cell phone cases… Everything beautifully illustrated with a lot of love…! The awesome guys at Colab55 also made an interview with me. It was a great opportunity to quote J. R. R. Tolkien and share a little bit about my work and the things that inspires me.




2014 foi também um ano de muito trabalho (ainda bem!)... Alguns dos trabalhos desse ano: O cartaz para o 3x3 International Professional Illustration Show. Ilustrações editoriais para as revistas Você RH (Editora Abril) e Sorria (Editora MOL). E uma arte comissionada com o tema futebol, Copa do Mundo e cidades-sede para a Umbro.

Lots of work were done in 2014… Here are some of them: A poster for 3x3 International Professional Illustration Show. Editorial illustrations for Você RH (Brazilian magazine about human resources management) and Sorria ("Smile", awnnn so cute!) magazines. And a commissioned art based on the World Cup for Umbro.









A finalmente...

O primeiro livro da série Ritmos do Brasil (Editora Moderna), escrito por Carla Gullo, Rita Gullo and Camilo Vannuci foi lançado no começo desse mês (ou no final desse ano, se preferir...)! O livro conta de uma forma divertida um pouco sobre a música brasileira e é totalmente ilustrado por mim. Várias ilustrações coloridas para um livro feito com carinho para ser curtido por crianças e adultos. Foi uma experiência incrível poder contribuir para esse projeto tão bacana.

And last but not least…

The first book of the series Rhythms from Brazil - Samba and Bossa Nova (Written by Carla Gullo, Rita Gullo and Camilo Vannuci) - was released in Brazil by publisher Moderna a few weeks ago. The book tells us a little bit about Brazilian music and features lots of full color illustrations by me. It was made to be enjoyed by children and adults as well…! It was a great experience to be able to contribute to this very cool project.





Poder trabalhar com a família Carrapatoso foi uma das coisas que mais gostei de fazer esse ano. O livro "Liga ou não Liga?" é o primeiro de uma série - Os Carrapatosos - lançada pela Editora Melhoramentos. Escrito por Eliana Martins e com ilustrações de capa e miolo criadas por mim, o livro conta a história, narrada por Rita Carrapatoso, a filha mais nova, que envolve autores e personagens dos livros clássicos (nesse caso, o Corcunda de Notre Dame) e o cotidiano da família Carrapatoso. Foi uma oportunidade maravilhosa de criar a partir do texto da Eliana e dar uma cara para os personagens da série.

Working on The Carrapatosos was also a blast. This is the beginning of a new book series titled "The Carrapatosos", published in Brazil by Melhoramentos. Written by Eliana Martins and with cover and illustrations by me, the book is a story - about family tragicomic situations and classics of literature (in this case, the Hunchback of Notre Dame) - told from the point of view of the spunky and lovely younger daughter Rita Carrapatoso. Being able to illustrate this project was an incredible experience as I had total freedom to create from the story by author Martins and give each character a face and a distinct visual.





E é isso! 10, 100, 200...! E se 2014 surpreendeu, agora minha expectativa é que o próximo ano seja ainda melhor e mais surpreendente… Tipo, como o Senhor Bolseiro... "Cheio de surpresas". Desejo a todos tudo de bom e muitas surpresas boas em 2015! Continue em frente, continue criando. Faça barulho onde estiver para que eu possa ouvir daqui e aplaudir.

There! 10, 100, 200...! It was unlikely 12 months ago that 2014 were going to be just like Mister Baggins: “Full of surprises”…! But it was a really exciting year and now I'm hoping that 2015 will be even better. I wish you - dear reader - a very, very, very happy new year…! Keep moving forward, keep dreaming and working hard. Make some noise that I can hear and applaud from here.
