Spotlight: Hotelo

A imagem em destaque de Novembro é a ilustração que fiz para a capa do CD da banda Hotelo, que será lançado no dia 29... "Hotel Espacial" é na verdade uma ilustração dupla, que começa na capa e continua no verso. O que aparece na capa (acima) é só um pedacinho dessa "ópera espacial". Abaixo, a imagem completa:

The artwork in the Spotlight this month was made for the newest album from the awesome Brazilian indie rock band Hotelo. The album will be available on November 29th and in its cover you will see this "Space Hotel" created by me. Actually, the artwork is a wraparound cover... In the front you see only a small fraction of the whole scene... Bellow, the complete picture:



A banda me procurou com uma idéia interessante: Uma base espacial onde alguns personagens representam as faixas do CD e outros momentos da história da banda. Eles me passaram alguns - poucos - ítens que gostariam que fossem incluídos na capa e deixaram todo o restante nas minhas mãos... Busquei criar uma imagem dinâmica e que pudesse se destacar (capas de CD são bem pequenas...!) ao mesmo tempo apresentando uma narrativa e contexto ligando tantos elementos diferentes...

The band members were looking for a "space base" full of colourful characters when they called me. A character can represent one of the CD tracks or is linked the Hotelo history. They gave me a - very short - list with specific items to be included but besides that they were very generous and gave me total creative freedom. I aimed for a dynamic image that could be very recognisable (since CD album covers can be very small...) and at the same time presenting a narrative to tie all the different elements...



Pensei que seria interessante ter um personagem que estivesse chegando pela primeira vez nesse mundinho: Ele representa o ouvinte que descobre a música da banda pela primeira vez... O recém-chegado leva uma mala (toda sua bagagem musical, talvez...?) e aparece olhando pelo vidro da cúpula principal. Sua jornada está começando...

One of the things that I first decided when planning the illustration was to feature a main character: A newcomer, setting his foot for the first time in the space hotel. He can represent the audience discovering the sound and the world of Hotelo for the very first time. He bring his briefcase and looks in awe through the glass of the main dome. His journey is just in the beginning...



Mais personagens... Gosto do jeito que o cara sem dinheiro e com flores nas mãos olha para a garota de ressaca na cúpula logo a frente... Tem um jeito vagamente "Romeu e Julieta"... O místico fumando narguilé foi uma sugestão minha que a banda adorou e fez questão de manter!

A closer look at the other characters: I like the way the guy holding flowers looks at the girl with a hangover inside the dome right in front of him... It has a twisted "Romeu and Juliet" feel, doesn't it...? And the mystic man smoking a hookah was my suggestion. The band loved it!



Olha aí a menina...! Vendo estrelas nos sentidos literal e figurado... Lá embaixo, um pato dirige o carrinho espacial.

Look at the poor girl...! She has stars and planets around her literally and figuratively... And down bellow we can see a duck driving the space car. 



Para o astronauta/saxofonista (na verdade é o desenho do pai do baterista) usei esses ornamentos para representar o som. A banda também pediu a inclusão de "três gatos loucos" e uma "super-nova"...

For the astronaut/sax (actually he is a drawing of the drummer's father) I used the flower ornaments to depict the music he is playing. In the background we can check two of the items in the band's wish list: "three crazy cats" and a "supernova".



Mais ao fundo (e no verso da capa) um foguete acaba de chegar com quatro integrantes de uma banda passando pela "alfândega"... Obviamente a banda é a Hotelo. Eles não poderiam ficar de fora da própria festa...!

In the back we see the spaceport: A rocket has just arrived with four band members. They are - obviously - our rock band Hotelo. I wouldn't leave them out of their own party...!

As I said before, some of the characters represents tracks in the album. You can see the full track list bellow. Can you guess who is who?
