Foi um trabalho muito divertido, durante a pesquisa para criar essas ilustrações tive uma oportunidade incrível de aprender um bocado sobre o folclore brasileiro: Ainda vou ver algumas desses eventos de perto e ao vivo! 12 illustrations about Brazilian folk traditions for Moderna (Brazil). I loved working on this project because during the research to create each artwork I had the wonderful opportunity to learn a lot about the folklore in my own country...! Bellow, you can see the 12 illustrations:
Boi-de-Mamão: Desde 1840, acontece em Santa Catarina apresentando a história de morte e ressurreição do boi. Possui elementos comuns com o bumba-meu-boi nordestino.

Boi-de-Mamão: Since 1840, the Boi-de-Mamão is played in Santa Catarina (South region of Brazil) and it tell us the story of the death and resurrection of the Bull.
Bumba-Meu-Boi: A história envolvendo um Boi que morre e é trazido de volta à vida. Uma festa popular que acontece todos os anos no Norte e Nordeste do Brasil.

Bumba-Meu-Boi: This is a tale similar to the Boi-de-Mamão, but this is the version that happen annually in the North and Northeast regions of Brazil.
Ciranda: A brincadeira de ciranda existe praticamente em todo o mundo. Aqui temos alguns brasileiros e brasileirinhos num parque, brincando ao som de alguns instrumentos típicos.

Ring Around The Rosy: Actually this is a playground singing game that can be found everywhere around the World. Here you can see adults and children playing accompanied by some Brazilian musicians.
Congada: Canto e música recriando a coroação de um rei do Congo, com influências religiosas cristãs. Foi uma das ilustrações que mais gostei de fazer, não sei explicar o porquê…!

Congada: Music and song are used to recreate the crowning of a King of the Congo, with christian influence (note the image of Saint Benedict). I absolutely loved working on this illustration, it was a strangely relaxing experience…!

June Festival: This is the annual Brazilian celebration (also known as Saint John Festival) and it is related to the European Midsummer (That takes place in the beginning of the Brazilian winter). See…? When is hot in Europe is when is cold in Brazil…!
Frevo: A dança e música originais de Pernambuco e tradicionalmente associados ao Carnaval. O Frevo existe desde 1907 e foi evoluindo durante as décadas seguintes até chegar a sua forma atual. Em 2012 o Frevo recebeu o título de Patrimônio Imaterial da Humanidade pela UNESCO.

Frevo: A fun dance and music style from the Pernambuco state in the Northeast region of Brazil. The name came from “frever” as misspeaking of the Portuguese word “ferver”
(to boil). It is said that the frevo makes people dance like they were stepping on hot ground. Frevo was included on the UNESCO's list of intangible heritage in 2012.
Jongo: Música e dança que integram a cultura afro-brasileira. Grande influência na formação do Samba Carioca, o Jongo seria o “avô” do Samba. No ano passado eu tive a oportunidade de ilustrar um livro sobre a história do Samba (Samba e Bossa Nova, Editora Moderna) e você pode ver algumas das ilustrações

Jongo: A dance and musical genre that is part of the afro-brazilian culture. It had a great influence in the Brazilian Samba. Oh, last year I had the opportunity to illustrate a book about the history of Samba (Samba and Bossa Nova, published by Moderna) and you can check some of the illos by clicking here.
Mamulengo: Teatro de bonecos popular no Nordeste, em especial no Estado de Pernambuco. Suas apresentações eram em praça pública, em geral nos arrabaldes durante os festejos religiosos.

Mamulengo: A type of puppet performance popular in Northeast Brazil, especially in the state of Pernambuco (the land of Frevo). Mamulengo performances are in public, usually in the rural areas and suburbs during religious festivals.
Siriri: Dança folclórica da Região Centro-Oeste e parte das festas tradicionais e festejos religiosos.

Siriri: Popular dance in the States located in the central region of Brazil. It’s part of the traditional religious festivals. The dance is similar to the Fandango.
