Folhinha: Tempo de Criança - 3 de 3 (Futuro)

Aproveitando que o Dia das Crianças está chegando, esse foi um trabalho feito para o Caderno Folhinha, da Folha de São Paulo, e que saiu no ano passado. Tempo de Criança: A idéia era apresentar uma "viagem no tempo" com artigos sobre como era a infância no passado, sobre como é hoje e até mesmo como poderá ser daqui alguns anos...! Nesse post, as ilustras criadas sobre o Futuro: As crianças vão continuar brincando é claro... Mas, segundo a opinião delas, como serão essas brincadeiras?

Last year I was invited to create a series of illustrations for Folhinha, the Folha de São Paulo newspaper supplement for kids. I also illustrated the inner pages as well: The supplement featured several articles about how kids played and what they liked in the past, how present time children play and interact with each other and even a "sneak peek" into the future: backed by children opinions and dreams today.

And this is Part 3... The Future!



Assim com nas ilustrações anteriores as cores indicam não apenas o posição no tempo, mas também o "sentimento". O Passado tem um tom dourado, o Presente - acontecendo agora, já - usa cores naturais e nesse possível futuro, as cores tem um quê de aurora, de amanhecer. O novo tempo apresenta possibilidades limitadas apenas pela imaginação.

Cada cena mostra o que uma criança "previu" para o futuro - mochilas voadoras, que tal? - num cenário futurista-retrô, uma forma de completar o círculo e dizer que o futuro já começou a tomar forma. Dessa vez, optei por deixar os personagens flutuando na página: as crianças brincam na rua, no céu e possivelmente em realidades virtuais. A informação é rápida e tudo acontece ao mesmo tempo, com rapidez.

Just like the previous illustrations, the colours are used not only to represent a moment in time but also the feeling of each moment: The scenes in the Past all have a golden aura and the scenes in the Present - they are happening right now - display a more natural color scheme. For this possible future, I went for a color palette inspired by the idea of dawn, of a new age of wonder that is just around the corner and is limited only by our imaginations.

Folhinha interviewed several kids and asked them what they think the Future will be like. Each scene represents a kid answer. The backgrounds shows a retro-futuristic cityscape, a nice way to go full circle and remind the reader that the Future is being built since Yesterday, with the actions and imagination of Today. Each scene is floating on the page, kids will play in sky, on the ground and even - perhaps - in virtual reality. Everything is happening fast and at the same time but somehow it will be ok.



Algumas das "previsões" da criançada eram bastante inusitadas e as minha preferida eram as que envolviam a descrição de como iremos nos locomover no futuro. As crianças no Presente são interessadas em moda e, é claro, tem seus palpites sobre como nos vestiremos no futuro: Uma roupa que mistura asas de libélula e pernas de cachorro é algo que eu gostaria de ver (e adorei ilustrar!). Esse seria um admirável Mundo Novo de verdade...!

Some of the predictions were very amusing and my favorite were the ones depicting some form of futuristic way of transport. And since the kids in the Present are into fashion, one girl described what kind of clothing we are going to see and wear in the Future: With dragonfly wings and dog legs, what can go wrong... This would be a Brave New World indeed...!

Folhinha: Tempo de Criança - 2 de 3 (Presente)

Nesse post, as ilustras criadas sobre o Presente: Criança ainda brincando na rua, surgem brincadeiras mais sofisticadas - carrinho com controle remoto, video-game com captura de movimento... - mas ainda há espaço para ler um livro ou brincar com bonecas...

In this second part, I will show the illustrations made for the Present section: Children are still playing outdoors, there are more sophisticated toys - video games with motion capture, remote controlled cars... - but there is still time for old fashioned stuff like reading a book or playing with dolls... 



Para o Presente, as cores são mais naturais e vemos uma praça onde as crianças brincam "em tempo real". A paisagem urbana já inclui mais prédios, a criançada já mostra interesse por moda (veja a menina orgulhosa com os tênis novos) e filmes (o garoto é fã do menino-bruxo no cinema). Um cachorro - na cena anterior nem tinha coleira - agora tem um dono. E os meninos e meninas andam juntos e misturam as brincadeiras rompendo com o estereótipo dos "clubes dos meninos" e "clubes das meninas".

To depict the Present, I used more natural colours - in contrast with the previous pages, where the Past had that golden aura - and all the action were depicted as if happening in real time. The urban surroundings are showing more buildings and is more busy looking. The kids are interested in fashion (the girl with big orange tennis shoes) and movies (the kid wearing a wizardry school uniform). The dog in this scene has a master and is also playing (or at least trying to!) with him. Boys and girls mix and play together breaking the old "Boys only" or "Girls only" stereotypes. 



Cada cena individual foi tirada de frases e depoimentos de várias crianças sobre o que elas gostam, quais seus interesses, quem são seus amigos... Elas também tiveram a oportunidade de falar sobre como elas acham que o Futuro vai ser, que tipo de novas brincadeiras irão aparecer... Isso veremos no próximo post: Parte 3 de 3, o Futuro.

Each little scene was inspired in phrases and interviews with many kids for Folhinha. They talked about what they like, what kind of  games they play, who are their friends... And each child also had the opportunity to tell us how they imagine the future: What kind of clothes, toys, movies and inventions  the little ones believe we will see in the next years? This will be the theme of the final chapter of this post... See you tomorrow (no pun intended).

Foi um desafio divertido criar as ilustrações para o Caderno...! Para o Passado, optei por uma paleta de cores "dourada", refletindo como a infância no passado é quase sempre lembrada como uma época mágica: A memória tende a idealizar o que já passou. Incluí alguns elementos com os quais busquei acrescentar à "narrativa" do Caderno... Brincadeiras, a aparência da rua e do bairro, o disco de vinil na mão da garota, o agrupamento meninos num canto e meninas no outro... Tudo isso irá mudar a medida em que os anos passam (ou as páginas da Folhinha são viradas...).

It was a challenge - and also a lot of fun - creating these illustrations for Folhinha...! For the section featuring the Past, I went for a "golden" palette: Our memory of the past - specially about our own childhood - is always somewhat idealised... The world was more innocent and magical, right? I tried to add some element that could help to develop the "narrative" proposed by Folhinha (A look through time at children and the evolution of childhood): A jump rope, the tranquil neighbourhood, the vinil disc, boys playing in one side, girls playing in another... All this will change in time (and in the next pages...).



Amanhã, a viagem continua em direção ao Presente....

Folha de São Paulo: Circuito SP

No ano passado, a Folha de São Paulo me chamou para criar um mapa ilustrado para o caderno Circuito SP. O mapa mostra algumas ruas e avenidas da cidade de São Paulo e cada catavento é um lugar com atrações para as criançada no mês de Outubro... Foi um trabalho bem interessante, pois eu não sou muito familiarizado com as ruas da cidade! Mas, no fim, tudo deu certo...! Acima, o resultado final do mapa. Abaixo, uma olhada mais de perto em algumas das ilustrações:

Last year, the newspaper Folha de São Paulo invited me to create an illustrated map for a special feature about fun places for children in October. Here in Brazil, October is also known as "the children's month". Above you can check the map and bellow a more detailed and closer look...














É isso! Embora esse mapa seja de 2011, talvez algumas das atrações continuem as mesmas nesse ano. Ei...! Não é tão difícil divertir as crianças... Pipas, escorregadores e até bolhas de sabão continuam fazendo sucesso ano após ano...!

And this is it...! Although this Circuit SP map is from last year, maybe some of the spots are still offering something for children of all ages. And is not too hard for kid to have fun: Sliders, kites and soap bubbles are still a success with kid, year after year...!
