Jornada do Herói | Hero's Journey

The new edition of Brazilian magazine Coleção Mundo Estranho (Weird World Collection in Portuguese) is all about Sci-Fi (with most of the articles being about Star Wars and Star Trek) and I got the wonderful opportunity of illustrating the "Hero's Journey": Joseph Campbell's theory about comparative mythology that was used by George Lucas as an inspiration and guide when he wrote the script for Star Wars (or Episode IV: A New Hope as is known today).

The ideia was to create a small info graphic featuring the many steps of the Hero's Journey divided into three sections: "The Departure", "The Initiation" and "The Return". We see our hero Luke Skywalker evolving from a simple idealistic farmer living in the remote Planet Tatooine to a fully formed hero (medal included) and savior of the rebel cause.

Being able to offer my take on such iconic characters was a lot a fun: Luke, Leia, Darth Vader, Obi Wan... And also enjoyed drawing the Millenium Falcon, X-Wing and the ultimate weapon of mass destruction: The Death Star.

Abaixo, a ilustração acompanhada do texto.

Bellow, you can see how the illustration and the info work together. The magazine is full of great articles and I felt very lucky to receive the article about the Hero's Journey, you see. "The Hero With a Thousand Faces" - the book where Campbell presents and explains his theory about the Hero's Journey - is one of my favourite books. It's really mind blowing.

And if you are not familiar with the Hero's Journey and it relation with Star Wars, I recommend visiting the wonderful Star Wars Origins web site. It will be time well spent, I assure you.

For last, you can see the beautiful cover art by Pedro Henrique Ferreira.

And a last tip: I really recommend J. W. Rinzler's book "The Making of Star Wars" (324 pages, Ballantine Books/Del Rey, published in 2007). It's really great and even the most obsessed Star Wars fan will learn something new about the beloved space saga.
